The Queue
Opera Scene: unnaccompanied Mezzo Soprano

It is September 2022 and the queue to view the late Queen lying in state has reached sixteen hours. Near the beginning - or the end - of the line, a woman chats amiably with her queue neighbours, but as she begins to near the hall it dawns on her that the monarch is not the only person she is mourning. Reaching the front, she is seized with indecision, aware that entering represents a finality she is perhaps unwilling to confront.

Anfang
Chamber: String quartet
“Anfang”, the German word for “beginning” is a short piece intending to capture the feeling of the start of something; of newness. A melody, at first fragmented, goes on to reveal itself as the piece develops, interspersing itself with ticking staccato gestures and rising pairs of chords. Originally written for the Consone Quartet as part of the NCEM Young Composers Competition 2022.
